WHY Handcrafted?
Glycerin is a humectant, which means that it attracts and retains moisture in your skin. Think of it as a natural skin lotion in soap.
Glycerin is a natural by-product of the soap making process. Most commercial manufactures remove the glycerin from the soap, process it and then sell it to other industries where it is used in pharmaceuticals, foods, cosmetics, and other products
This isn't the case for handcrafted soap! Glycerin still remains in the bar with the end result as a mild, pure soap that gently cleanses your skin without being harsh, irritating, or drying.
What's So Bad About Commercial Soaps?
Commercial Soaps are manufactured in large factories, using the most economical ingredients. Often, they contain fillers which dilutee the actual soap content; most have the glycerin removed.
Commercial soaps often aren't actually "soap" which means they do not clean your body. This is why they are marketed as "body bars" or "beauty bars". According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), only a few soaps on the market are true soaps, while the majority of cleansers are synthetic detergent products
The cold process technique uses sodium hydroxide (a natural ingredient) that commercial products do not use because of the time and cost it involves, and soap just doesn't clean without this ingredient. Commercial soaps last longer and lather so well because they are made using detergents, you know, the same ones we use to clean our floors, counters, and bathtubs-EW!
Commercial soaps contain chemicals and take out the glycerin, a natural by-product of the cold process technique, which is what makes our skin soft and subtle to sell in the more profitable lotions and creams.
Handcrafted Soaps
Handcrafted soap is made locally in small batches with personal oversight and care. This enables the use of high-quality ingredients and the ability to add specialty oils and unique additives to personalize our formations.
Why Handcrafted?
-
Quality, Health & Safety
Handmade products use natural, food-grade ingredients. These are typically gentler – especially for those with allergies or skin sensitivity. Because they are handcrafted in small batches, the maker is directly involved in the quality and safety of each item.
-
Environmental Impact
Handcrafted products are more sustainable from start to finish. Makers typically source raw materials that are more natural and are often organic and local. Small batch, handmade production generates a smaller carbon footprint, while final packaging reduces plastic and paper waste.
-
Economic Power
While online sales offer access to makers around the world, most handcrafters are small businesses. Your purchase puts money directly back into a community, supporting jobs and local economic development.
The Soap Making Process
Although healthy ingredients are one of our top priorities, it doesn't stop there. A real soap maker must also have clearly defined processes to produce a consistent product that you can trust and rely on. We follow and adhere to all of the FDA rules and regulations to ensure safety, purity of ingredients, transparent labeling, claims, and cleanliness:
We do not make medical/drug claims (on our website, social media, or in person)
